are still lost. joining me now is bob shrum and alicia menendez, host and producer for huff post live. bob, what will it take for the party to learn the lessons of this election? >> they've got to get past the immediate crisis in terms of the fiscal cliff. no matter what is true, no matter what he says, john boehner is going to have to sound like he's resistant and putting up a fight but at the end of the day he's going to have to make a deal that is going to go by those term. and then we're going to go on to the debt ceiling and if the republican party in the house crashes this economy and crashes the markets by refusing to extend the debt ceiling, the business community is going to go nuts. and, b, this will become the party of recession, tax rates for the top, hating social security, and hating medicare. that's a recipe for long-term political irrelevance. >> now, alicia, let me give you a news flash that came in. conservative blogger erick erickson is up with a petition to have john boehner fired. it says, quote, speaker boehner is undercutting conservative principles by putting forth

and tired of gop failures in congress. joining me now is bob strum, senior advisor to the kerry and gore campaigns and now a professor at nyu. and visiting professor of journalism at the university of georgia. thanks to both of you for being here tonight. >> glad to be here, rev. >> good to be here, reverend. >> will public opinion force the republicans to get out of the way of the president? >> i think it may. it's going to be tough. it's going to be the perils all the way. but the republicans are on the fiscal cliff, they're on the gun cliff, they're either going to move and come to some degree of cooperation or they're going to stay in this extremist cul-de-sac. if they move, the president is going to have some landmark achievements. if they don't move, as a prominent republican, they're in danger of becoming functionally a third party. that is a permanent party in presidential politics. but boehner, in particular, has people who are crazy to deal with. they dislike the president so much that if he proposed something they had been for a year ago, they would now be mightily against it.

obama named to be the new face of america's foreign policy. joining me now is bob schrum, senior advisor to john kerry's presidential campaign and now professor at nyu. bob, you've known senator kerry for a long time. what's your reaction to today's announcement? >> well, i think the president had the right line. he's the perfect choice. he's the perfect choice for three reasons. first, hillary clinton and her service in that role has changed the nature of it. people around the world have come to expect a very larnl, a very senior figure as secretary of state. people look at him and say he was almost president of the united states. they know him. they take him very seriously. secondly, reverend, as you know because you were in all of those debates with him, he has an extraordinary mastery of foreign policy. he understands it. he also understands how to move things. and, third, he has a remarkable coolness under pressure. when everybody wrote us off, he said he had no chance for the nomination. he just kept going, had no press following us. never once did i see him lose his temper. he kne

, d.c. and when you look at what happened in the senate, with bob dole on the floor, the most honored republican to serve in the senate in a long time, a war hero begging them to confirm that treaty, to ratify that treaty, 38 republicans voted no on some whacked out idea. >> no. that's the danger, governor, of being dismissive. and i think you're right. but the ugliness combined with their powerful moment, they are talking about breaking the president, that's the president's word, i'll break them. and to stand up and see them vote in 2012 against disability with the former standing party asking them, the ugliness of this is unimaginable. >> horrible. >> joan? >> it really was a low moment. and almost unpredictable. every time i think they can't surprise me, they surprise me again, reverend al. so governor rendell is right. it's way too early for us to crow, to say that the fever is broken. this is a sign that jim demint thinks that he's going to strip the betina off the heritage foundation. they are really a talking point tank but now it shows the ideology rather than intellect. jim d

. a high water mark since bill clinton's reelection against bob dole in '96. they just don't know what to make of it. and the first thing they gravitate toward is this old line of having to change the tone or the message. what they're not getting is it's not just about changing the tone. it's not just about not talking ablt electrified fences and not being uncivil. it's also about fundamentally changing the policies that they embrace. being more willing to engage in conversations and discussions and actually get comprehensive reform done. get the dream act done. think about and include the latino community as part of the fabric, the family of the united states, which it clearly is and always has been, when they think about the latino community, you can tell that both in tone and in policy, they think of it as something foreign. and that's not the case at all. so they need to improve both the tone, but, more importantly, they need to change the policy behind the party. >> talking about policy, the president is poised to make a push for immigration reform after the new year. the los ange
